The Ryder for January 2015
From the Ryde Directors – our wish for everyone to have a Happy New Year and the best for 2015!
The past year seems to have just flown by but as you think back over the past 12 months you will realize just how much has been accomplished in that time. The Co-op has had a lot of TLC thanks to the work of a lot of people, and it shows!
We will be going into 2015 with a freshly painted meeting room housing our fledgling museum curated by Larry Peck and Janet Merkley; improved kitchen facilities managed by Chefs Larry and Anne: improved washroom facilities and free WiFi access, to highlight just a few of the changes. These are just some of the many changes that have occurred over the past 12 months. All of it happened because of the hard work of our volunteers, fund raising efforts supported by our community and members, as well as various grants obtained by the Co-op due mainly to the efforts of Judy Campbell. We are all coming out of 2014 feeling positive and energized by what has been accomplished. 2015 will be another great year and we are all anticipating wonderful things to come. We can do it because we get such terrific support from our members!
We had such a blast last year celebrating Ryde’s 135th on that rainy August Saturday, that we had to try to top it this year. On Saturday, August 15th, join us for our first ever Ryde Heritage Day. We are pleased to announce that we have booked local country music star Grant Tingey and his band. For a sample of his music, check out this link: Hear Grant’s Music There will be great food, vendors and lots of exciting attractions for the whole family. Save the day so you can attend this event! We had some disappointed people last year who hadn’t had enough advance notice!
Chef Larry invites you to join him at the Co-op after church on Sunday, February 8th for a soup and sandwich lunch for only $5. These small lunches are going to be offered once per month over the winter as a way to extend your after church socializing opportunity for an hour or so. See you at 12:15 for lunch!
Sandra Winspear will be back with her popular Clubhouse program on January 9th. Join the Seniors’ Clubhouse program which supports wellness, chronic disease management, socializing and games. Cost is $3 and includes lunch.
Beginning January 5th from 1 – 3 pm, join Jennie for Internet Café – an opportunity to get some free assistance with your various devices. Now that the Co-op has free WiFi access we can connect with all your wireless devices. Bring your laptops, smart phones, tablets and eReaders and we will work together to get you going on them. Specific classes can be arranged once the needs are determined. Coffee, tea and muffins will be available for a small fee. Dates, times and specific topics for future sessions will be determined at this time. Contact Jennie for information at 705-687-5234 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
The much-coveted chili-cook-off aprons are ready our annual chili challenge! Dust off your best chili recipe and bring your creation to the Co-op. We’ll all treat our taste buds to the variety of offerings and the favourite will prevail! The cost for members is $5 per person if you bring a dish, or $10 without. A family bringing chili and two children under 13 eats for $20 and children under 5 are free. Contact Jennie to enter your prize-winning chili at 705-687-5234 or email email@example.com.
The Ryde Co-op is pleased to be continuing our Sustainable Living Workshops in partnership with the District of Muskoka. Please register in advance by calling Judy at 705-687-2406.
- March 8th ~ Cook Once, Eat for a Week
Chef Larry will be demonstrating how to stretch your grocery budget over several meals by choosing ingredients that can be put together in different ways to create many meals. Taste samples of the meals will be provided. By spending one day preparing and cooking, you can have food ready in your freezer for future meals. If there is sufficient interest, another workshop will be offered where participants will make meals to take home.
- March 22nd ~ Straw Bale Construction
- April 12th ~ TBA & 4. April 26th~ TBA
The Ryde Co-op continues to grow and dream of bigger things. We rely on the on-going support of our wonderful community. Our membership not only supports our programming, but the numbers provide validity to our efforts to gain a long-term lease for the building.
Can we surpass 200 memberships in 2015? Can we reach 300? Help us by spreading the word! At only $10, our memberships are the best deal in the area. Members enjoy lower fees for dinners and special programs that are offered. Members also have access to the free and low-cost events that we host. (Membership at the seniors’ centre in town is $25). If you participate in our programs or you support having local and community based programming, please take the time to renew your membership or join the Ryde Co-op using the form below. We thank you for your ongoing support!
